Some time ago, RT reported the following: ‘Annexation – that’s what tens of thousands of protesters in the Middle East are calling new Arab union plans. It comes after Saudi Arabia said it wants to form an alliance with Bahrain, paving the way for an EU-style of integration. Independent political analyst Dan Glazebrook explains why he thinks the Bahraini government is so supportive of the plan (19 May 2012)’.
MSNBC’s F. Brinley Bruton recently added that “Saudi Arabia’s plan to forge a closer military and political union with other Persian Gulfcountries risks inflaming tensions with Iran, experts warn. Bahrain, a tiny island kingdom which is home to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, is intent on strengthening its ties to its powerful neighbor. The Saudi spear-headed plan envisions a unified military and foreign policy across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which also includes the Sunni monarchies Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatarand the United Arab Emirates. The proposal is seen as a bulwark against the growing influence of Shiite Iran, Saudi Arabia’s regional rival”.
Sheikh Fahad Al-Khalifa, the media counsellor to the Bahraini Embassy in London, declared: “We are progressing from the (Gulf Cooperation Council) to a Gulf union”. And the Gulf News’ Habib Toumi adds that the “proposal to form a Gulf union [figured] high on the agenda of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) foreign ministers’ meeting on Tuesday [, 5 June], the GCC secretary-general has said. The meeting, the first to be held since last month’s GCC consultative summit in Riyadh, will also review reports on strategic issues and the negotiations between the GCC states and economic blocs, Abdul Lateef Al Zayani said”.
