‘In Northern Iraq, Kurds are playing an important part in the fight against the Islamic State group (aka ISIS or ISIL). Among the Kurds are members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which has been fighting for independence from Turkey for 30 years, and is designated a terrorist group by the United States, EU and NATO. It’s an awkward fact that the PKK is now fighting on the same side as the U.S.-led alliance. Women make up almost half the PKK fighter ranks, including these dedicated soldiers who left their families to fight for their cause (11 November 2014)’.
