Sir Henry Ward said in the House of Commons on 25 June 1839: “Look at the British Colonial empire — the most magnificent empire that the world ever saw. The old Spanish boast that the sun never set in their dominions, has been more truly realised amongst ourselves; and not only do we possess in our colonies every possible variety of climate, and of soil, but the power of producing almost every article of which our manufacturing industry stands in need”.[1]
