— The Erimtan Angle —

Gundem Otesi

The Biblical or rahter the Quranic flood was discussed on Turkish television the other day: on the show Gündem Ötesi presented by Pelin Çift on the state broadcaster TRT. Çift was joined by two academics with supposed expertise in the field of mythology and other legends: Prof.Dr. Ömer Faruk Harman, a specialist in the historz of religion from the İbn Haldun University (Başakşehir/İstanbul) and Dr. Yavuz Örnek, a chemist and member of the Istanbul University Institute of Marine Sciences and Management.1 And, the latter really stole the show by means of uttering the most outlandish statements and remarks. Örnek, for instance, claimed that Noah convinced his disbelieving son to join him on the Ark using a mobile phone to talk to him . . . he furthermore also alleged that, 10,000 years ago, Noah built a steel ship powered by nuclear energy, explaining that his claims were all based on scientific proof. However, he experienced difficuties when he tried to explain the exact nature of these scientific arguments. In addition, the academic added that Noah’s son had used a flying object and that Jesus had been born 2,300 years ago.

Ali Ornek

The clearly hapless chemist also claimed that Noah had not collected specimens of every animal on earth in his Ark, but rather sperm and egg samples that had been supplied by America and France . . . The presenter Pelin Çift and her other guest Prof. Harman were both rather surprised by Örnek’s weird statements. In fact, upon the presenter attempting to clarify and correct her guest’s outrageous utterances, Örnek countered by stating “I am a scientist and I speak in the name of science”.
