The Internet Chronicle, the self-styled “number one source of all things” and apparently based in Cuthbert, Georgia,[1] published a piece on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden’s revelations regarding the secretive Alaskan site known as HAARP or the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program. In July, Oliver Wilis wrote that the now world-famous computer specialist-turned-runaway media sensation Snowden “released documents . . . to Internet Chronicle reporters proving that the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program, or HAARP, is definitively engaged in a program of assassination and mind control”.[2] Officially, the U.S. government claims that the not-so secret facility’s main purpose is “to study natural phenomena in earth’s ionosphere”, but conspiracy theories abound on its nefarious influence, ranging from manipulating the weather over causing earthquakes to even more outlandish claims. In Popular Science, a ‘a leading source of science and technology news since its inception in 1872’, Abe Streep summarizes these conspiracy-minded views as follows: “If the paranoid blogosphere is to be believed, every morning a group of plasma-physics grad students wakes up at a research facility in Gakona, Alaska, 200 miles north of Anchorage, and prepares for another day of playing God. It’s cold, dark as a mineshaft in winter, and the day’s work does little to cheer the mood. Depending on the unpredictable agendas of military scientists, this group of technicians must shoot radio waves into the upper reaches of our atmosphere to create missile shields, eviscerate enemy satellites, set off the occasional earthquake, or control the minds of millions of people”.[3] Writing as relatively long ago as 2008, Streep wryly added that the “truth is a bit less ominous” than these apparently far-fetched claims and assumptions.
But now in 2013, the whistleblower Edward Snowden reveals another layer of facts that seem to indicate that HAARP is not just another high-tech facility located in the inhospitable reaches of Alaska. The Internet Chronicle sent a crew to Snowden’s “lavish room at Sheremetyevo Airport’s Hotel Novotel”. Snowden seems to have told the Internet Chronicle team, that the “HAARP research station [is] strategically based away from prying eyes near Gakona, Alaska, [and] is actually used to terminate or manipulate would-be dissidents of global capitalism on the scale of millions of people”, adding that with “these terrestrial antennas, NATO is able to, on a global scale, remotely silence ‘perpetrators’ of ‘deviant or subversive’ strains of thought”.[4] These claims are very strong, if not totally outrageous, indeed and would need some kind of documentary evidence. Snowden seems to have explained to the Internet Chronicle that ‘HAARP projects ultra-high-powered radio waves. Those waves operate at the same electronic frequency as the truncus encephali, or brain stem, selectively inducing deaths seemingly by natural causes – including by some appearing to coroners as innocuous as strokes or heart attacks’.[5]
Snowden turns to the nitty-gritty of how these alleged HAARP attacks work and even becoming personal, avowing that, “When and if the intelligence community doesn’t view outright assassination as an optimal effect, ‘they’ can simply make a ‘target’ act in an insane fashion, in order to discredit them. When we were in transit between Hong Kong and Moscow, WikiLeaks staff and I had to fend off the constant threat of radio-generated homicidal delusions”.[6] The Internet Chronicle piece continues that ‘Snowden bolstered his testimony with HAARP documents gleaned from the private email accounts of officials as high-ranking as admirals and Air Force brigadier generals. Sources within the intelligence community have confirmed to The Internet Chronicle the authenticity of these documents, as well as their horrifying ramifications for human dignity’.[7] And, according to the Internet Chronicle piece Snowden constructed a “haphazardly constructed Faraday cage” in his Moscow hotel room to shield himself from any unwanted HAARP attacks. Snowden told the team that “Without it [the haphazardly constructed Faraday cage], I would have been dead the moment The Guardian‘s first story went to print”.[8] And what has Snowden set up in his hotel room?? According to Wikipedia, a ‘Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure formed by conducting material or by a mesh of such material. Such an enclosure blocks external static and non-static electric fields. Faraday cages are named after the English scientist Michael Faraday, who invented them in 1836’.[9]
The Internet Chronicle piece concludes that “Snowden’s testimony appears to be partially in line with that of a U.S. senator’s brother, in 2009. It was then that he, Nick Begich, told ‘Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura’ that ‘just to affect the brain with emotional state changes is so easily accomplished’ with HAARP”.[10] Now, this ‘Nick Begich, Jr., has been twice elected as the president of both the Alaska Federation of Teachers and the Anchorage Council of Education. He is also a noted conspiracy theorist, concentrating on the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program. He authored the research book Angels Don’t Play this H.A.A.R.P. and appeared on the TV show Conspiracy Theory’.[11]
Under the heading “The Military’s Pandora’s Box”, Begich, in conjunction with Jeane Manning, summarises his book as follows “Put simply, the apparatus for HAARP is a reversal of a radio telescope; antenna send out signals instead of receiving. HAARP is the test run for a super-powerful radiowave-beaming technology that lifts areas of the ionosphere by focusing a beam and heating those areas. Electromagnetic waves then bounce back onto earth and penetrate everything — living and dead. HAARP publicity gives the impression that the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program is mainly an academic project with the goal of changing the ionosphere to improve communications for our own good. However, other U.S. military documents put it more clearly — HAARP aims to learn how to ‘exploit the ionosphere for Department of Defense purposes’. Communicating with submarines is only one of those purposes. Press releases and other information from the military on HAARP continually downplay what it could do. Publicity documents insist that the HAARP project is no different than other ionospheric heaters operating safely throughout the world in places such as Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Tromso, Norway, and the former Soviet Union. However, a 1990 government document indicates that the radio-frequency (RF) power zap will drive the ionosphere to unnatural activities”.[12]
President Obama has been talking about the withdrawal of U.S. troops in 2014 for a long time now . . . and machinery is being shipped home now, but does this mean that the war is over??? The new mainstream news channel Al Jazeera reported that ‘[m]ost of NATO’s troops in Afghanistan are due to leave by the end of next year, but getting the gear out may be more difficult than bringing them in.Because Afghanistan is landlocked, equipment has to be moved by road through Pakistan, then north through central Asia, or it has to be flown out. Al Jazeera‘s Jennifer Glasse reports from Kandahar (22 July 2013’.
On the other hand, Human Rights Watch’s Heather Barr offers another perspective: “Many people are breathing a sigh of relief to see international combat troops leaving Afghanistan. All foreign combat forces are slated to withdraw by the end-2014 deadline, and many have already gone. Deaths among foreign troops have fallen reassuringly. For Afghans, however, the war goes on. Many civilians are being injured and killed. More than 400 Afghan soldiers and police are dying each month. People are fleeing their homes – almost 60,000 of them in the first six months of 2013 – and many are trying desperately to get their families to safety outside the country. For them, there is no end in sight. And in many respects, the war is escalating. A United Nations report released [at the end of July] shows a 23 percent increase in civilian casualties so far this year compared with the same period in 2012. Among the civilians hardest hit? Women and children. Civilian casualties of women caused by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are up by a mind-boggling 138 percent over 2012, and overall civilian casualties of women are up by 61 percent, while injuries and deaths of children are up by 30 percent over 2012. The Taliban and other insurgents are responsible for the majority of these deaths and injuries, according to the UN. While the Taliban has a code of conduct which says that civilians should be protected, the reality is that the Taliban does little to protect civilians. It even insists, including in a statement today, that many civilians working for the government are legitimate targets, in clear violation of international law. Having said that, there is plenty of blame to go around. One new and disturbing finding in the UN report? The concern that deaths and injuries among civilians are being caused by explosive remnants of war left behind by NATO forces as they rush to pack up and leave. As foreign troops leave, the foreign media presence in Afghanistan is also winding down. The years ahead could be brutal and bloody for Afghans. Will anyone still be paying attention?”.[1]
